Student Satisfaction |
The Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) is a survey conducted on a national basis among both two-year and four-year colleges and universities by the Noel-Levitz consulting firm. The majority of the survey questions ask students to rate the importance of and their satisfaction with over 100 factors covering many different areas of their college experience. A "performance gap score" is calculated by subtracting the mean satisfaction rating for an item from the mean importance rating. Areas where the university is having trouble meeting student expectations are indicated by the higher performance gap scores. Seventy-nine of the items are included in one or more of the 12 composite scales (listed below). There are also a number of questions on respondent characteristics. Individual universities are allowed to include up to 10 of their own institution-specific questions.
In Fall 1996, the SSI was administered to students in a sample of undergraduate classrooms at UIC resulting in 2,898 returned questionnaires. Both detailed and summary findings from that survey, plus comparisons with a national sample of four-year public universities, are presented here.
